This 122-page bundle of CBT (cognitive behavioral treatment) activities is for the school-based mental health clinicians: counselors, social workers and psychologists.
CBT is based on the theory is that our feelings and behaviors arise from our perceptions (or thoughts), rather than from external things like people or situations. CBT teaches clients to regard their thoughts (internal language) as mental tools. In a typical CBT session, by experimenting with these mental tools, clients learn that internal language can be used to regulate their perceptions, emotions and behavior. Clients then experiment with using these mental tools in their everyday lives. The client’s feedback from these real-life experiences is used by the therapist to plan future sessions and assignments.
Because CBT is highly educational in nature, it would appear to be great fit for school settings. But can we really expect young children gain insight into their internal processes, and then be able to apply those insights to the difficulties they face in their daily lives? Yes, with child-friendly strategies--and the right scaffolding--cognitive behavioral interventions can be successful with children!
